Code for Sustainable Homes (formerly EcoHomes Assessments)

The Code for Sustainability replaces the EcoHomes scheme developed by the Building Research Establishment (BRE). It is hoped that it will be used by home buyers to help inform their housing choice, by house designers and builders as a guide for design, and by developers as a means of differentiation and advantage over competitors. For social housing providers, costs of energy provision will be reduced as a result of increased efficiency, and funding bodies will welcome greater levels of sustainability.

Compliance with the Code is currently voluntary, but it is highly likely that the government will introduce mandatory compliance for all new developments over the next few years.

Ecology is one of the nine design categories in what is a 6 star rated system, and contrary to popular belief, even the smallest flats can provide opportunities for ecological enhancement. We have experience in maximising the available ecology credits for a wide range of developments - from multi-storey flat blocks to more spacious designs - there are always credits to be gained from a range of traditional and innovative measures.

The earlier an ecologist is consulted on development proposals and the star rating required, the easier it is to incorporate design features into the scheme. Many aspects will have a dual purpose, and will integrate with other sustainable design features.
