Barking Riverside, Dagenham
Phased development of circa. 11,000 homes
Barking Riverside Ltd
Multiple ecological services: Habitat and protected species surveys and monitoring, monthly ecological checks, protected species translocation, habitat design and enhancement
Ongoing project circa. 15 years plus
Barking Riverside is a large, multi-phase development that extends along 2km of the northern bank of the River Thames. The scheme will deliver approximately 10,800 new homes as well as healthcare, schools, open space, public squares, new rail stations with links to central London, and 65,000m² of commercial floor space including shopping, community and leisure facilities.
D F Clark Bionomique Ltd. have provided ecological consultancy services for this project since 2009. We work as part of the Barking Riverside design team to deliver ecologically sound, practical mitigation and enhancement solutions. Our remit on this project is broad and the services that we provide include:
Ecological Clerk of Works
Provision of day-to-day advice on protected species constraints, invasive plant management and management of site works around sensitive ecological receptors such as disturbance-sensitive ground nesting bird species, water courses, and the Thames and Tidal Tributaries Site of Metropolitan Importance.
A monthly ecological walkover of the entire site to identify any ecological issues, which are then communicated to the client in the form of a clear, simple monthly site report, regular correspondence and site meetings with the client and site contractors.
Production of a quarterly Ecological Traffic Light Plan and annual Invasive Species Management Plan to summarise site-wide ecological constraints. These documents are then distributed to all site contractors.
Active involvement in scheme design
Attendance at regular design team meetings and input to scheme design to ensure that habitats for key ecological receptors such as Water vole and wetland birds are protected, maintained and enhanced beyond the construction phase.
We work closely with our parent company, D F Clark Contractors Ltd., who are responsible for the design and delivery of a large proportion of the built-environment and open space landscaping. This collaboration gives us unparalleled expertise in delivering practical habitat solutions that are of genuine benefit to wildlife. Key species for which we have created habitat so far include Water vole, reptiles, wetland birds, and breeding birds. We have also created carefully targeted foraging and roosting habitat for bats.
Discharge of Planning Conditions
Production of ecological strategies and monitoring programmes to address requirements of planning conditions relevant to ecology, and documents conditioned at planning under historic permissions.
Specific Mitigation Works
Translocation of onsite populations of Water vole and reptiles from works footprints to new habitat areas.
Liaison with Natural England, the Environment Agency and other key stakeholders to ensure that robust mitigation is delivered. We have secured several protected species mitigation licences from Natural England for project works relating to Water voles.
Ecological Compliance Assessments
Review of specific infrastructure and development proposals to ensure that they are designed in accordance with the terms of relevant planning conditions, conditioned documents, local and national planning policy and wildlife legislation.
Code for Sustainable Homes and BREEAM Assessments
Production of plot-specific Code for Sustainable Homes Eco 1 to Eco 4, and BREEAM LE02 to LE05 assessments to maximise the creation of ecologically valuable habitats within individual development plots. Again, we work closely with D F Clark Contractors Ltd. to deliver a diverse range of built-environment habitats including green and brown roofs, wildlife-beneficial garden, street planting and urban swales.
