Protected Species
With the current emphasis on biodiversity and protected species in UK planning policies, it has never been more important to consider ecology as part of any development. In many cases there are no wildlife issues to address, but a survey to confirm such is almost always required as standard.DF Clark are able to carry out all protected species surveys, and offer mitigation advice and licence applications where necessary in order to achieve the best mix of results for wildlife, planners and developers.
A common problem presented to ecologists is the wish to meet client demands when the time of year is inappropriate for a species. There are specific survey periods for a number of species, and undertaking surveys outside of these windows is likely to result in objection from Natural England. Similarly, the granting of protected species licences to permit what would otherwise be illegal activities will only apply during restricted seasons.
In a small number of cases there are still methods of investigation which can be used, but please contact us to discuss whether this is possible. Our survey and mitigation timelines can be downloaded for future reference, and can prove very useful when considering development time scales. Ecology should be considered very early on!
